Heat Pumps

Opting for a heat pump with a ductless mini-split is often advantageous due to rebates and incentives, essentially reimbursing your investment. Local vendors typically stock ductless heat pumps over cooling-only units. Given similar prices, choosing a heat pump offers both cooling and heating benefits, making it a logical choice. For central systems, however, heat pumps may not suffice in extremely low temperatures, making them less suitable for regions with harsh winters like New England. In such cases, a hybrid dual-fuel system with a heat pump can help reduce energy costs for propane, oil, or electric heating sources.

Common in new construction, central air dominates cooling in homes, though ductless systems are gaining popularity. Efficient cooling relies on well-designed and installed duct systems, particularly emphasizing the importance of return ductwork to properly manage heat loads for optimal performance on hot days.

Ductless Mini-Splits

Ductless mini-splits offer efficient cooling without ductwork or window space. Installation is swift, requiring mounting indoor/outdoor units and connecting refrigerant lines, drain, and electricity. Most units provide both heating and cooling with high SEER ratings, saving on utility bills. Utility companies often offer rebates. Some units can provide heat at -15 degrees, suitable for New England winters. Unlike central AC, each air handler can be zoned for different temperatures, ensuring even and quiet heating and cooling.
